Inga Kostogriz-Vaitkienė and Daina Senapėdienė – Partners of our Vilnius and Riga offices – from now on can be found in the list of EU attorneys, which have been registered in Latvia. Both ladies are going to practice under Lithuanian name of the attorney – “Advokate”.
Can lawyers in Latvia use the „attorney” title from the country of their origin?
There are many foreign attorneys in Latvia, practicing for almost 15 years, using the title “attorney” from the country of their origin (for instance, attorneys from Germany work under the title “Rechtsanwalt”). The only difference between the “advokāts” – the Latvian name of the attorney and “advokate” (or “Rechtsanwalt”) is that EU attorney is not allowed to participate in criminal litigation without the local attorney. Co-operating with the local attorney in such cases is compulsory.
If the lawyer wish to practice under the Latvian name of the attorney (Advokāts), he or she needs to practice in Latvia for 3 years actively. After that time a special exam prepared by the Latvian Bar Association needs to be passed.
